Flooding notes

Today we are finishing our notes on flooding. Then we will be talking about what Manitoba government is doing to prevent flooding.

Discharge
The volume of the water that flows past a particular point during a set amount of time.
How much water is moving compared to regular times.

Sea level
The height of the water at a particular point compared to the standard sea level.
How high/deep the water is compared to regular times.

Tracking the flood
Hydrograph is a graph used to show changes in a river's discharge over time.
Can help predict how future floods will behave(amount of water,length,etc.)
The area downstream will flood for longer period of time.
It takes longer for all of the water to flow past the end point
   -small stream/river are affected faster then larger bodies of water
   - changes are noticeably faster since they are small to begin with

                                                           Physics: Optics
Today we finished our questions for the Ted Ed video that we watched yesterday. Some of the animals that use bioluminescence ( light made by living organisms ) are the angler fish, box jelly fish, railroad worm, deep sea shrimp and many more. The advantages of using bioluminescence are
- you live longer ( prey wont want to eat you)
-Scare away your predator
- attract a mate
-attracts some food ( angler fish uses it to get close to another fish to eat)

The Heart

The Heart

         Today in science we are making a model of parts of the heart.  Each group has to make a flippable diagram of the heart. This will show the interior and the exterior of the heart. They also have to show how the blood flows inside the heart. each has to make sure they use the full page,mark all exterior and interior parts and show the blood path.

The Blood Path
1)Oxygen- poor blood moves from the body to the right atrium ( through the vena-cava)
2)Blood moves from the right atrium to the right ventricle
3)The right ventricle moves blood to the lungs to get oxygen ( Through pulmonary artery)
4)Oxygen-rich blood moves from the lungs to the left atrium( Through the pulmonary vein)
5)The blood moves from the left atrium t the left ventricle
6) The left ventricle moves oxygen-rich blood to the body(Through the aorta and coronary arteries)

Perfume

Abstract:  In this experiment we are trying to see how long it takes to smell perfume within 10   feet.  My   hypothesis is that when you squirt perfume twice it will   take less than  one  minute to smell the  perfume. I believe that the brand does matter because some brands make their perfume   scent stronger than others. The brand may also affect how long it takes to defuse in the air because of how strong the scent is.

Procedure: Before we did our experiment we needed to gather our materials. We needed to gather  tape, four different perfumes and a timer. During this experiment we needed to measure  out ten feet and put tape at the end of each side. We had Mrs. Neuman at one end and the  class at the other end. Mrs. Neuman would take a perfume bottle and stood at the end of  the tape. She would squirt the perfume twice and we would time how long it would take to  smell the perfume. Some people used their devices to time how long it took to smell the perfume. We did this procedure three times for each of the perfumes. We would have done this procedure four times but one of the perfumes clogged up when we tried to use it. When we got our time for how long it would take for us to smell the perfume we recorded our data. After we got all of our data we put the results onto a chart.

Conclusion:  In the end it would take around 15 to 30 seconds to smell the perfume. Some of the perfumes were stronger than others so we had to step out of the room for a while. My hypothesis was correct that you would smell the perfume in less than one minute. Also      that it does depend on the brand of because some perfume company’s make their perfume than others. I found out the depending on the brand the amount of perfume that is squired may be more than other because of the size of hole in the nozzle. On the chart the Pods of Vanilla was the strongest smelling perfume to smell and it took the shortest amount of time to smell.
