Water Systems

Today we started our new unit "Water Systems"
The three main Topics we are going over are, Intruduction to water, Water drainage and Water treatment. We made a K:W:H:A:L:Q chart to learn about water.
Some of our K's include,
K: Water is liquid, Nt solid, different types of water,Salt,Fresh and Tap, To make water clen you have to boil it.
Some of our Wants to lern abut water are,
W: Why is ocean water salty, how is fresh water fresh? What happens to water in space?
We actually watched a video from Chis Hadfield in space! He explained to us what happens when you wring out a towel soaked in water. When he rung out the towel, the water created a "Tube" like forcefield around the towel and is hands. Then when he let go the water stuck to his hand, so that he could wash his hands.
We went over the parts of the Water Cycle one by one.
Accumulation: The process in which water pools in large bodies. Ex) Oceans,Ponds,Seas,Lakes
Condensation: The process in which water vapour in the air turns into liquid water, Condensing water forms clouds in the sky.
Evaporation: The process in which liquid water becomes water vapour. Ex) Water Vapourizing from puddles, lakes
Precipitation: The process in which water falls from th sky. Ex) Rain, Snow, Hail
Surface Runoff: Any rain, snow, melt or other water that flows in surface streams, rivers or canals
Transpiration: The process in which some water within plants evaporates into the atmosphere. This is why it can feel muggy in a rain forest.

Video All Stars

Getting it together would help make it better
We liked the comedy/entertainment
We didn't like that we couldn't retry it

What we could have done better: Timing
What we did good: Have fun!

We liked the entertainment.
We disliked the time limit.

*We have one group whose video is not completed yet, but will be shown soon!
The man is explaining what it looks like when you mix colours, like red and green, and blue and green.

Blue, green, red, yellow, white ,purple. They are taking some colours away to make different colours. I like it they are funny.

Mentos + Diet Coke = Explosion! Why?

In our Science class, we've been reseaching about our experiments. I've been reseaching about what's inside the mentos that cause the reaction. I'v found out that it's the arabic (Coating) and gelatine that cause the reaction. Also that there's little holes on the outside that the bubless like to spawn. Right when the mento hits the coke, the carbon dioxide in the coke react with the mento and bubbles start to fom on the mento. The bubbles from so quickly that it forces them upwards and hen fly right out of the bottle.
For my experiment I am using 3 Bottles of Diet Coke and three kinds of mentos. I am using a regular mento, then usin a normal mento again, but taking the shell off of it to see the difference of the explosion. The I am using a non branded mint, (Scottish Mint) to see the difference between the regualr and (fake) kind of mints.

Now we have to come up witha list of materials that we will use during our experiment. I've already came up with my list today.

1. 3 Bottles of Diet Coke (2L)
2. Mentos
3. Non-branded mentos (Scottish Mints)
4. Mop
5. Bathtub
6. Ipod (To record/Pictures)

Variables:
My controlled variable is: The bottles of Diet Coke

My Independent variables are: The Three different kinds of mentos

Procedure:
1. Gather the materials for experiment.
2. Set Up 3 Bottles of Coke side by side inside a bathtub.
3. Set 1 of each mento in front of a Bottle.
4. Take Cap off Bottles.
5. Drop each mento in the bottle it is beside.
6. Stand back and record the explosion!
7. See how much coke is in each botle and visually measure them
8. Mop up floor if any soda got out of the tub.

Buoyancy!

Today in class we started working on a new experiment! We are going to test out Buoyancy in a virtual lab like we did with viscosity. We also learned about Archimedes Principle. Archimedes was the man who discovered buoyancy. Archimedes Principle explains why a object will float or sink. If the object displaces an amount of water that weighs as much or more than the object, the object will float.
Today we just started on the experiment to test buoyancy. We aren't experts yet but soon we will be! If any of you would like to test buoyancy, here's the URL.

The Main Muscle!

                                                        The Main Muscle
                                            Dez, Steven,Kurt,Paul and ME!!!

Abstract: Have you ever wondered what the muscle keeping you alive looks like. It is not shaped like the heart we all know how to draw. It looks more like a football shape. Guess what? We cut open a full grown heart! It was kind of hard, but some parts were squishy! Our goal was too what a heart acutally looks like in real life, instead of just seeing pictures.

Work in progress to be completed November 20th

Designing A Cell

Cells and Systems

Designing A Cell

Today we made a chart to plan out an Editable Cell. We came up with up with many options for parts of the cell.

Cell Membrane- Icing, Pan, Fruit Sheet

Nucleus- Cookie, Orange, Donut, Popcorn Ball, Cupcake

Vacuole- One Big Fruit Gusher, Grapes

Mitochondria- Gummy Hotdogs

Cell Wall- Icing, Rice Krispy, Kit Kat, Cookie Dough, Carrots, Celery

Cytoplasm- Jell-O, Cake, Pudding, Food Colored Cool Whip

Chloroplasts- Celery, Gumdrops, Kiwi

Kids have broken up into groups of four, and each group will create one cell. We will start our creations on Tuesday and work on them for two days.
